How to Use Social Media to Your Advantage

It’s no secret that social media can be a powerful tool when it comes to promoting your business. You get to reach people both locally, and far away, instantly. There’s a lot of information out there about how to use social media to better promote your business and it can get overwhelming, so here are 5 simple things you can do to use social media to your advantage.

1. Follow

One of the best things you can do is Follow other accounts. Follow your competitors, follow other businesses, follow accounts that give you great ideas for content, follow other successful accounts. Following other types of accounts, especially successful ones lets you see what they’re doing right and how you could implement that for your own purposes.

2. Network

Networking gets repeated over and over and it might sound like a broken record, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for your business. Remember those accounts you just went to follow after number 1? Interact with them. Network with them. Show followers you’re engaged and have a personality worth checking out on social media.

Contact your local Chamber of commerce and see what networking activities they have available to get in-person connections going as well.

3. Visuals

Don’t underestimate the power of the picture (or video). If you’re stuck one day, not knowing what to post, post a picture. It can be something aesthetic and pretty, because people are attracted to those images, or it could be a fun selfie in the break-room at lunchtime. Take a picture of the squirrel that always sits outside that one window. People want to see your business as welcoming, friendly, and personable.

Videos are important as well. Currently, videos are all the rage across social media. Take the same ideas as above and turn them into videos. You can also make use of the Your Story feature on social media platforms.

4. Consistency

The one thing you may have heard more than networking would be consistency is key. If you’re struggling with gaining a following, try simply posting more consistently. Posting consistently shows that you’re actively engaged in the community and with your following. If you have a busy schedule and just keep forgetting to post, try using a social media scheduling platform like Hootsuite or Buffer. Facebook also has a schedule in advance feature you could make use of.

5. Content

Content matters! Promoting your business is important, as is displaying events or business-related content, but make sure you give your target audience more engaging, enjoyable content that they will relate to better. This ties in with Visuals. Mix up what you post, or maybe consider doing themed days of the week like Throw-Back Thursday or Motivation Monday. Think about if you were scrolling through social media and the kinds of images or content you’d want to see.
